If you are planning a honeymoon, you may be considering a tropical location like the Maldives vs. Bora Bora. Paul and I were in the same boat about 2 years ago and after lotsss of research (yes, I mean serious research) we made our final decision – a Maldives honeymoon. Well, a Maldives anniversary trip.
Both of these beautiful islands offer different things so, depending on what type of trip you are trying to have, you will definitely need to choose one over the other. To get started, let me tell you how this even became a thing in the first place.
I am a huge island fan and had the opportunity to visit several already, like the Caribbean islands: St. Thomas, St. John, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Turks & Caicos. Obviously, for my honeymoon, I’ve always had much bigger plans and Bora Bora had ALWAYS been on my dream board. A honeymoon to Bora Bora was literally my dream and I just knew it was going to happen. Honestly.
Funny thing is, Paul and I had our honeymoon to Bora Bora booked twice!! Yes I said TWICE! We were lucky to get engaged mid pandemic – February 2021 to be exact. There were way too many travel restrictions set in place due to Covid-19 and, sadly, we chose to cancel that trip due to being unable to even enter the country. We each refused to do something we weren’t comfortable with just to travel. I prayed that everything would somehow work out better than I even imagined. & trust me, it certainly did and always has/will. #trusttheuniverse
Anyways, long story short, we had a Bora Bora honeymoon trip planned that we canceled before our wedding. I think we officially canceled it 3 months before and settled with knowing that we would book Bora Bora as soon as travel restrictions were lifted. Well, wouldn’t you know that they were lifted a couple months after we got married on January 29, 2022. & yes, you guessed it, we booked for Bora Bora AGAIN for the second time. My vision board dream was coming to fruition and I could hardly wait!
One day I was casually strolling through Pinterest (probably about 3 months after booking our trip) and saw an infographic on the best times to visit different tropical locations. It stated how monsoon season for Bora Bora was in January. I immediately panicked. I mean, how else should I have reacted?! You really do learn something new every day, I swear.
We canceled that trip…for obvious reasons lol. Not sure I ever mentioned this but also on my vision board for as long as I can remember has been a winter wedding. In North Carolina it rarely snows but I had always dreamt of a snowy, winter wedding and this was a time that I had to realize the old saying for what it’s worth – you can’t always get what you want. I had gotten my winter wedding (it even ‘snowed’ on our rehearsal day & wedding day) but, unfortunately, having a honeymoon to Bora Bora at the exact same time was just not a good idea.
With all of that being said, I started doing loads of research into the Maldives since, according to the Pinterest infographic I read, the end of January was a great time to visit. In fact, the best time to visit the Maldives is between the months of November and April. This is when the temperatures are at best and the weather is typically sunny with mild storms.
So, this is what led us to the Maldives. In all honesty, if you are stuck between choosing a honeymoon to the Maldives vs. a honeymoon to Bora Bora – the rest of this blog post is for you.
